After what seemed to be an eternity of life without netball, the Suncorp Team Girls Cup was a perfect welcome back, showcasing the talent and sheer determination of every side.
Not only was it a blockbuster introduction to the season, it meant the Melbourne Mavericks finally got a chance to prove themselves on the big stage.
Trialling new combinations and team connectivity, there was bound to be some mistakes made. Let there be no uncertainty however, the Mavericks and their fashionable new dresses proved themselves a force to be reckoned with.
The side, lead by their inaugural captain Amy Parmenter, had three nail biting finishes against the Queensland Firebirds, New South Wales Swifts and the Giants, each game leaving them a maximum of four goals down! In the hit out against the West Coast Fever, the Mavs forced a tie with an impressive 50 goals a piece.
Despite the side not taking home any wins on the scoreboard, the tournament proved to be the perfect opportunity for the Mavericks to work alongside each other and identify areas of improvement before heading into the official season.
The Suncorp Team Girls Cup was no doubt a rollercoaster of nerves and excitement for this budding side, but with a glowing bright blue army expanding alongside them, there are no limits as to what the Mavs can bring to the table this Suncorp Super Netball season.
The Mavericks will play their first game against the Melbourne Vixens on April 14 at John Cain Arena.
