Round six saw the Mavs to come up against the Queensland Firebirds. After the two teams hit it out in the Team Girls’ Cup, seeing the Mavs going down by only one goal, the team were keen for their revenge.
Q1: 19-13, Mavs lead
The beginning of the match saw the Mavs come out with a bang! Both Cardwell and Jok looked confident to the post, assisted by Jovic and Nankivell showing true mid-court patience in their feeds to the team’s shooters. Jok’s form looked impeccable with her incredible reach over the likes of Remi Kamo, doing her best to stop the force that Jok is. The conclusion of the first quarter saw the Mavericks lead 19-13, one of their best starts of the season and taking home a quarter win, only having won one for the year.
Q2: 37- 27, Mavs lead
The second quarter was a Jovic V Dunkley special, showing off their abilities to read the game, as well as their fast footwork to work. Jovic’s assists were clean and well received, finding Jok and Cardwell just as well in this quarter, both of whom were shooting at 95 percent and above. The Mavs switched on this quarter to push their lead out to ten goals, showcasing their clinical netball as well as digging deep to clean up any loose ball or intercept. Liv Lewis was on the hunt this quarter, eager to make her mark on the game, flying in with a stellar intercept that further lifted the Mavs spirits going into the second half of the game.
Q3: 52-41, Mavs lead
The third quarter presented the Firebirds an opportunity for a comeback, with Emily Moore and Tippah Dwan both sinking two from three supershots, allowing their team to slowly create a comeback. The Mavericks, however, had other ideas, taking the easy option to post and ticking off the one point shots to keep edging out their lead. Shimona Jok continued to impress with her strong and controlled takes of the balls, and down the other end of the court Olivia Lewis timed herself perfectly for a direct block off the shot of her opponent, impressing everyone in the arena. The Mavs lead the Firebirds 52-41 going into the final quarter of the game.
Q4: 69-62, Mavs win
Not wanting the Firebirds to get a jump on the last quarter, the Mavericks came out of the third break with a bang, converting centre pass to goal in less than ten seconds! Despite Moore sinking super shot after super shot, the Mavericks continued to chip away at their score, cleverly taking up time on the clock when in possession, and working on making their game as efficient and clinical as possible, both of which they have been working on at training over recent weeks.
The Mavericks took home their sixth game, 69-62.
In just their second win as a club, the Mavs continue to shine as the new kids on the block. No doubt, Head Coach, Tracey Neville and Assistant Coach, Nicole Richardson will be extremely impressed with the outcome of the game and the grit from their side.
