Off the back of a home ground victory in Tasmania, the Melbourne Mavericks return to Melbourne soil this Sunday 25 May as they prepare to host the Adelaide Thunderbirds at John Cain Arena.
The Thunderbirds - reigning Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) premiers - claimed both previous encounters between the two teams, dominating in Round 5, 2024 with a 59-37 win, followed by a 67-41 victory in Round 11.
With the Thunderbirds currently sitting fourth on the ladder, and the Mavericks just behind on fifth, this week’s match is crucial game for momentum entering the second half of the season.
The Mavs are coming off a 71-64 victory over the Queensland Firebirds in which was a game that saw connection and team work down the court. Meanwhile, the Thunderbirds are looking to bounce back after a narrow five-point loss to West Coast Fever.
In last week’s matches, the Mavs goalers claimed100% shooting accuracy in the one-point zone, however, the Thunderbirds remained a threat in the Power Five, notching nine Super Shots.
Mavs head coach, Tracey Neville, spoke on the team’s momentum heading into the second half of the season.
“The next thing for us is back-to-back wins - we talked last year about the highs being so high and the lows being so low, and now it’s about the preparation,” Neville said.
The Thunderbirds are renown for keeping their opposition to limited scores.
“Against the Thunderbirds the biggest challenge is getting scores on the board. They have a history of limiting teams to low scoreboard. We know we can score and that is important against them,” Neville continued.
Goaler, Sasha Glasgow, spoke on the team’s mindset after the team's win against the Firebirds.
“I think we are going to take confidence and know that when we stick to our structures and our game plan, we know that works. We have a lot of strengths that we are going to take into this game and hopefully the flow-on effect continues,” said Glasgow.
The Mavs are looking to claim their first-ever for back-to-back wins - head down to John Cain Arena this Sunday, to see them in action against the Adelaide Thunderbirds!
