Broadcast: Kayo / Foxtel / Binge
The Melbourne Mavericks are heading west to take on the West Coast Fever at RAC Arena this Saturday, May 10.
It is set to be another tough contest for the Mavs. The Fever are coming off a high in the form of a narrow two-point win (68-66) over the Sunshine Coast Lightning in Round 4, and will be wanting to keep their momentum.
The Mavs however have a point to prove, and after going down to the Melbourne Vixens (59-67) in the third edition of the Melbourne Derby, they are even hungrier for a win.
This will be the first meeting for the two sides in 2025, however the Fever currently have the upper hand after claiming both wins from the teams’ initial two meetings in 2024. In Round 3, it was a close match (69-62), but Round 14 saw Fever stretch out the lead before finals (76-57).
Following last week’s loss to the Vixens, Mavs' head coach, Tracey Neville, looked at the pressure the Mavs need to produce.
“I think the key for us is putting the pressure on early and taking those moments. We have to be clinical, and I think that's what we really let ourselves down [in last week’s game].”
Mavs' shooter, Shimona Jok, also reflected on the Round 4 clash with the Vixens, and how her side will regroup for this week.
“We pick up ourselves from [last week’s] game and definitely go back and focus on our style of play, and know that Fever's going to come out and hit us very hard. So, we have to be more technical, tidy up our game and go and hit them strong.”
The Mavs may be the underdogs, but this match will be a battle, particularly between two formidable shooting circles.
Tune in to see the Mavs aim to claim their first win against the Fever this Saturday night from 7pm AEST.
