The Melbourne Mavericks are back at John Cain Arena on Easter Sunday – April 20 - to take on the Giants in front of a home crowd.
Still chasing their first win of the season after having tight contests in the first two rounds, the Mavs have plenty to play for this weekend. It’s a milestone match for shooter Shimona Jok as she celebrates her 100th Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) game, which will be extra motivation for the Mavs to get the win at their second home game in front of a sea of blue.
The Mavs are not alone in facing their first win of the season – it’s something the Giants will also be seeking. Ironically, both suffering six-point losses in Round 2, with the Giants falling to the Vixens, whilst the Mavs went down to the Swifts.
The last encounter between the two teams prior to this Sunday’s clash was a tightly-contested battle at the 2025 Team Girls Cup, where the Mavericks edged a one-point victory.
In last year’s inaugural season for the Mavs, the Giants took the win in the first match up between the two sides – 59-66 at John Cain Arena in Round 7 – before the Mavs evened the score to take the win in Round 13 - 55-54 – on the Giants home court in Sydney.
Ahead of her 100th national league game, Jok reflected on her journey in the League thus far.
“It’s massive, I never thought I would have ever gotten to 100, I wasn’t even counting,” Jok said.
She also acknowledged the growth of her team and their continual development.
“I feel everyone’s found their feet in where they need to be, and we are still building on a combination and refining as a playing group. So, I can say we have made massive strides in where we need to be.
“One thing with me – I’m always open to be team first, whatever the team needs in that moment, I’ll play that role…because once we win that’s all that really matters.”
Do not miss Jok in her 100th game as the Mavs fight for a first win at John Cain Arena this Sunday.
