The Melbourne Mavericks are excited to announce their entry into the Super Netball Reserves competition for the 2025 season. This marks a significant milestone for the Mavericks as they join the fierce lineup of teams in this highly anticipated league.
The Super Netball Reserves competition, re-introduced in 2024, serves as a crucial development pathway for emerging national talent. It was established to support talent identification and provide additional match play for athletes on the cusp of Suncorp Super Netball. The 2025 season will see the Mavs become the eighth Suncorp Super Netball affiliated team in the competition.
With the Mavs entering a team in the Super Netball Reserves, the aim is to build further Victorian netball pathways and to create an environment for all aspiring elite netballers. With the aim to establish a pathway from the top down, the Mavs Super Netball Reserves team gives the opportunity to Training Partners and those getting less court time to continue to develop their craft in the most effective way possible; via competitive match play.
Melbourne Mavericks General Manager, Shae Bolton-Brown, said the club was thrilled to be in a position to provide another pathway option to aspiring local talent.
"We are dedicated to creating a comprehensive pathway for elite netballers in Victoria,” Bolton-Brown said. “By entering a team in the Super Netball Reserves, we are ensuring that our training partners and those not getting court time have the opportunity to develop and showcase their skills. This initiative reinforces our commitment to providing multiple pathways for aspiring netballers in Victoria."
The inaugural head coach of the Mavs Super Netball Reserves team is Tracey Brereton, who is currently the head coach of the Bendigo Strikers in the Victorian Netball League (VNL). Brereton brings a wealth of experience and a strong track record in developing talent to the new Mavs pathway.
Nicole Richardson, Melbourne Mavericks Assistant Coach and Head of Pathways, expressed her excitement about the new team.
"This is a fantastic opportunity for our athletes to gain valuable match play experience and develop their skills. The Super Netball Reserves competition will provide a platform for our players to compete at a high level and prepare for future opportunities in the Suncorp Super Netball.
"Tracey is an exceptional coach with a proven ability to nurture and develop talent,” Richardson continued. “Her experience in the Netball Victoria Pathway - and more recently with the Bendigo Strikers – plus her dedication to player development, makes her the perfect fit for our Super Netball Reserves team. We are confident that under Tracey’s guidance, our players will thrive and reach their full potential."
The seven-week Super Netball Reserves season will run alongside the Suncorp Super Netball season, from Round 4 to Round 10. The 2025 edition of the competition will also provide teams with extra national match play opportunities through a bolstered Finals Weekend and an in-season tournament. The Finals Weekend and the new ‘Play-In Tournament’ will take place at Melbourne’s Waverley Netball Centre – home of the Mavs - in June.
