The Melbourne Mavericks wrapped up day two of the Team Girls Cup with a clean sweep, securing two impressive victories against the Giants and Sunshine Coast Lightning.
Game One: Mavs vs Lightning
The Mavs came out firing in their first game of the day, with Tayla Fraser controlling the midcourt and effortlessly connecting with an in-form Shimona Jok, who was dominant throughout. Amy Parmenter was unstoppable, consistently racking up intercepts, while Charli Hoey made her debut for the Mavs, grabbing a few rebounds and settling in seamlessly. Uneeq Palavi was on fire, sinking crucial shots that extended the Mavs’ lead. The game featured a strong performance from our training partners, with Liv Lewis and Jessie Grenvold working well together toward the end.
The Mavs secured a convincing 55-34 win, thanks to excellent ball movement and defensive pressure.
Game Two: Mavs vs Giants
In the day’s final game, both teams fought hard, with tough, physical play from start to finish. Uneeq Palavi was strong from the outset, and while the Mavs took some time to hit their stride, they equalized with a 2-point shot at the end of the first quarter. Montana Holmes entered at centre, bringing fresh energy and helping lift the team significantly in the second quarter. Kim Brown’s defensive presence and smooth ball transition down the court were key to the Mavs' success. The third quarter concluded with Amy Parmenter being sent off for “dangerous play,” but the remaining six players on the court held their ground, heading into the final quarter with a narrow one-point lead. The last quarter was just as intense as the rest, with both teams battling hard until the final whistle.
In a thrilling finish, the Mavs clinched the win in the final minutes, securing a 43-42 victory.
Head Coach Tracey Neville shared her thoughts on the day:
“The players’ growth across both games was very pleasing to see. We’re continuing to build our combinations, and some of our training partners really stood out after applying the lessons from yesterday.”
The Mavs will be back in action tomorrow, for the final day of TGC at 3:30pm AEDT taking on the NSW Swift.
