Off the back of their first win of the 2025 Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) season, the Melbourne Mavericks are back to take on the Melbourne Vixens in the Melbourne Derby.
This Sunday, 4 May, the crosstown rivals are set to take each other on on familiar territory - John Cain Arena, both teams’ home venue.
Having has similar starts to the season, the already competitive match-up is poised to be even tighter. Both teams enter Round 4 having had their first win against the Giants. In Round 2, the Vixens beat the Giants, 61-55, whilst the Mavs won 71-56 in Round 3. Both Melbourne teams are currently sitting at one win, two losses for the season to date, and are both eager to notch their second win of the season.
Coming off the split round, the Vixens fell to West Coast Fever last weekend whilst Mavs have the momentum of coming off a win the weekend prior.
In 2024 – the Mavs’ inaugural season - the Vixens swept the ledger across both Derbys, beating the Mavs in Round 1 (68-61) and Round 9 (77-58).
We are yet to see the two teams face in 2025, but regardless of what we’ve seen on court so far this season, we know we’ll see a fierce encounter, with both teams not only are they fighting for the city of Melbourne bragging rights, but also a position in the top four.
Off the back of her team’s first win of the season against the Giants, Mavs’ Head Coach, Tracey Neville, looked ahead to the Melbourne Derby.
“For me the home Derby is always the winner, and to be fair the venue here is both our home grounds,” Neville said. “[What’s going] against us, it’s something we’ve never done [beat the Vixens]. We must be more clinical in our play - we know they are good in possession, and I think for us it’s going to be a good match up.”
Come and fill John Cain Arena with Mavs fans this Sunday when we take on our biggest rivals, right at home here in Melbourne!
